What is an assessment center?

Assessment centers are a selection process where organizations choose candidates through a series of exercises, tests, and interviews.

There are five main types of assessments; situational judgment tests (SJTs), knowledge-based tests, personality tests, assessments of non-academic skills and competency-based interviews.

A typical assessment center will include a series of tasks and valuation methods, which may include:

  • Group discussions
  • Presentations
  • Exercises
  • Written tests

Center for assessment is used widely in graduate recruitment, specialist training, promotions and performance management. It is also often used for team building among co-workers. Some large employers use their own centers, but some large companies, such as banks and retailers, also use shared ones.
