What is an Additional Claim?

An additional claim is a claim for unemployment insurance benefits filed by an individual who has already filed one or more regular claims for unemployment insurance benefits. An additional claim is not a new claim, but rather an extension of the original filing (or claims).

In most cases, anyone who has been out of work for at least 7 days and is eligible for regular unemployment benefits can file an additional claim. To be eligible for this type of benefit payment, however, you must have earned wages from at least one employer during the base period (the first 4 quarters) or prior to becoming unemployed; additionally, some states require that those claiming this type of payment must have also paid into their state's unemployment fund.
