What is ABA Code?

ABA code, or Automated Banking Association code, is a unique number used to identify financial institutions. It's important because it helps banks and credit unions identify one another when transferring transactions from one institution to another.

The first 4 digits of the ABA code are called the bank identification number (BIN). They identify which Federal Reserve Bank serves that institution. The remaining 5 digits are assigned by each individual financial institution to help speed up electronic payment processing within the United States and internationally.
