What is a career plateau?

A career plateau is a situation in which an employee is no longer progressing. He or she may be stuck at one level for an extended period of time, or could even feel like they’re hit a wall and stopped moving altogether. The reasons behind this can vary from person to person.

A career plateau comes when employees have achieved success in some area, but then their progress stalls. A person not moving up or sideways and feeling like there is nowhere else to go with their job. 

What causes career plateau?

There are several reasons why employees might be experiencing a career plateauing. Below are some of the most common causes:

  • Lack of motivation and confidence
  • Lack of support from managers
  • Lack of training and development opportunities, including mentoring programs to help you grow in your role or learn new skills that will benefit your career progression
  • Lack of opportunities for promotions (or even pay increases) because the company is downsizing or restructuring its workforce

What can HR do to address an employee’s career plateau

According to the career plateau definition, this situation can become a serious problem for both the employee and the employer. The HR department should identify such issues in a timely manner and guide employees on the way to solving them. Here's what HR can do: 

  1. Consider opportunities for growth and development with the employee. Many companies have training programs, mentoring programs, and other ways of helping employees develop their skills. If an employee has been working in the same role for a while but feels like it's time to move on, consider getting him an opportunity to explore different positions within a company or even moving on to another one altogether. If that doesn't work out, try seeking out opportunities where he or she can work with people from other departments — this will help broaden horizons and give employees new perspectives on different types of work processes.
  2. Organize networking with colleagues and managers. Employee with career plateaus can be useful to talk more with coworkers. They might be having the same problems that he or she is, so it's worth talking to them about it and getting their advice on how they overcame their own plateaus.
  3. Help the employee update his skills. Employees can keep their skill set up-to-date by practicing what they've learned, learning new things, and taking classes. For example:
  • Learn a new language or take an online course in coding.
  • Read books or articles on topics related to your field of work.
  • Ask an expert in the field for advice on how they got where they are today.
